IT Calculators
Calculators for everyday tech questions. The Download Time Calculator shows how long a file takes to download at your internet speed.
1 calculator each one also works as a widget
Megabits and Megabytes
Internet speeds are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), while file sizes are shown in megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB). One byte is 8 bits, so divide the speed by 8 to get megabytes per second. On a 100 Mbps connection that is 12.5 MB/s, and a 1 GB (1,000 MB) file takes 1,000 ÷ 12.5 = 80 seconds at full speed.
Real downloads are usually a little slower than the plan's speed, because of network overhead, Wi-Fi and other traffic on the line. The calculator gives the time at full speed, so treat its answer as the best case and add a margin when you plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to download 1 GB?
At full speed, 80 seconds on a 100 Mbps connection and 5 minutes 20 seconds at 25 Mbps. Real downloads usually take a little longer.
Why is my download slower than my internet speed?
Speeds are quoted in megabits, and files in megabytes, which are 8 times bigger. On top of that, Wi-Fi, network overhead and other devices on the line all take a share of the connection.
Are the IT calculators free?
Yes. They are free and run in your browser, with nothing to download and no account to create.
